3 Social Media Monitoring Tools to Crush the Competition

By now most companies are aware that social media is important. Very important. This makes monitoring social media efforts even more crucial when trying to help grow your business. You want to make sure you know what is said and when it was said on both your accounts as well as the accounts you follow. This will help you better respond to the trends of the network, analyze your competitors, and learn from some of the leading voices in your industry. After all, if you’re going to spend hours a day tweeting and liking and stumbling, you may as well do it right.

Unfortunately, this can be extremely difficult because there are so many social networking sites to manage. You will be dealing with different followers, different trends, and different types of information as you move from one site to the next. For example, LinkedIn generally focuses on business opportunities and advice while Facebook typically focuses on promotions and special deals. In other words, whether you’re learning how to start a business or just trying to improve the visibility of your company, the monitoring aspect of social media can get overwhelming.

Many companies have solved this problem by enlisting the help of social media monitoring tools. These tools help keep all social actions organized for you so you can focus on the important aspects of social media. Below lists the top three tools used by companies:

Top 3 Social Media Monitoring Tools

1. Conversocial – Focus on conversation

Conversocial has been around since 2009 and has been proven successful ever since. It works to keep you on top of discussions about your company that happen via social media so you can react. It also helps companies determine which content is more popular in terms of social media. This gives companies a better idea about what is working and what is not when it comes to social media. The service is known to provide great customer service and offers advanced deals for those hoping to work with colleagues. You can download the most basic version of the tool by clicking on “Sign Up & Pricing” on the homepage for free or check out the team or enterprise version for a cost of $149-$299 per user per month. Below is a screenshot from the tool itself:

You will notice that the bar on the left-hand side gives options such as @Mentions, Direct Messages, Assigned to you, and Accepted. The options allow you to break down your information even further; thus making this very user friendly.

Conversocial Screenshot

2. Socialbakers – Focus on statistics

Another one of the largest social media monitoring tools, socialbakers is also considered one of the most user friendly. This tool puts its focus on statistics for the major social networks—Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, and YouTube – and represents over 60 countries. It was originally called the Facebakers when it began in 2009, so it’s no surprise they offer a feature called “Engagement Analytics” that enables statistical analysis of Facebook worldwide. The service also offers a feature called “Engagement Builder,” which gives users the ability to track conversations that are happening and whether or not they are getting engagement on their sites. Finally, the site also gives users the option of seeing how their social media efforts compare to their competitiors. If you’re not getting as much engagement, you’ll be able to see why. Below is what you would see if you were to purchase socialbakers:

Socialbakers Screenshot

3. Socialmention – Focus on reach

This tool puts its focus on reaching users through social media. It tracks blogs, comments on blogs, and things that are said about your company via social networking. It not only follows these conversations so that you can react quickly, but it shows you the strength of your brand. In other words, it will estimate the likelihood you are being discussed online, the ratio of mentions that are positive versus negative, if people are talking about your company repeatedly, and how many unique people are referencing your company each day. Below is a screenshot of the service:

You will notice that the bar on the left hand side shoes whether or not the things being said are positive or negative, breaks your influence down by keywords, gives you a strength, sentiment, passion, and reach percentage, and gives you exact numbers when it comes to retweets, number of unique visitors, and last mention.

Social Mention Screenshot

Many companies such as Loreal and BMW use social media monitoring tools to help stay organized. If you’re a serious company, you need to take social media seriously. It’s difficult to do that on your own, but these tools were designed to help.

One of the biggest challenges that face bloggers is coming up with an idea. According to Hat Trick Associates, there are approximately 450 million “active” English language blogs in existence, so coming up with an original idea isn’t easy. It seems that every topic you could ever imagine has been covered online in one way or another. One of the easiest ways to be unique is to talk about personal experiences, but other than that coming up with a great article idea is usually by looking at other blogs and business articles and creating your own spin.

However, there is a way to come up with an idea easier and quicker—follow Facebook and Twitter trends. Blogging is obviously tied very closely to social media, so being able to follow the trends is great for a few reasons:

You know you will be writing about something that is of interest to a large group of people. This should help the popularity of your blog.

You never have to worry about coming up with a relevant idea. This should help keep your blog current and fresh.

You will not have to rack your brain to think of a good article idea. You will be able to get started right away and save time when writing for your blog.

If you’re writing about trending topics and more people are coming to your blog, you have a better chance of nabbing those followers and subscribers.

At the very least, following a social media trend is a way to come up with something to write on your blog that day (even if you want to ignore the fact that that article will be extremely relevant and interesting to a lot of people). Consider how you can go about following Twitter and Facebook Trends:

How to Follow Twitter Trends

Twitter seems to have been made to help people follow. The Twitter hash tags are the easiest way to see what’s trending at any given point in time. For those who are unfamiliar, a hash tag is a way for users to categorize their tweets so that their message can be a part of a trending topic. You can search for these hash tags by using Twitters built-in function. This is located on the right side of a profile page and will tell you exactly which topics are trending at that very moment. You will see something that says “trends” and next to it you will see where your trends are coming from. For example, you could have worldwide trends showing up on your home page or change it to your city. Below is an example from my Twitter page:

You will notice that I am following the trends of the United States, but if I wanted to change that location to follow trends in Carlsbad, California for example, all I would need to do is hit “change.” You will notice the topics up top use a hash tag, (ex: #iAlwaysLikeTo). You can learn more about how you can use hash tags by visiting Twitters help page.

If you see a Twitter trend that you think would make an interesting article but you want more information, simply click the trending topic. It will then send you to all the tweets that used that topic. The screenshot below is what I see when I click the trending topic #iAlwaysLikeTo:

I often find story ideas based on what is trending on Twitter. Most of the time I end up learning about things and writing about things I never would have imaged. This helps me stay on top of my game as a blogger while offering great information to my readers.

How to Find Facebook Trends

Facebook does not use hash tags so it is a bit more difficult to keep up with the latest trends. I use Twitter to come up with blog ideas much more often than a do Facebook, but this is not to say that Facebook has nothing to offer. Facebook is working to create a way to place similar topics into a single post. This already works well with friends, but Facebook still has to create a feature that allows the site to determine trending topics. You can read more about it at Part of the Web Family Facebook blog.

For now, the easiest way to see what topics are trending on Facebook is to simply look at your newsfeed. Your Facebook page should be following all readers so their activity should pop up on your homepage. See what some of your friends are talking about, and decide if you can create an article based around their thoughts. After all, although you’re not seeing what’s trending across the country, you can see what’s trending across your readers, and that’s the most important thing.

In true Google fashion, they have added yet another facet of their Google-opoly, with the creation and of Google+ in July 2011. The end of November 2011 showed a 25% growth from the previous month, and counting. The question remains: can the new social networking site, Google Plus Marketingperforms as an integral part of your business marketing plan?

Google Plus Marketing

How Can You Use Google Plus Marketing in Your Business?

You can use Google Plus Marketing in a variety of ways. With multiple capabilities, there is the possibility of this becoming the Facebook for businesses.

As a smaller business, you can use circles to assemble your customers into groups. Whether they want to hear about promotions, breaking news, product information or new media, you can reach the right customers with the right information.

Here you can chat with the hangout feature. As you can imagine, this can be an easy way to connect with customers or business partners. You can then use your page to announce a time when you’ll be taking questions via video. Your customers are engaged with you and your product page at the same time.

This can be yet another way to gather user generated content. Because people can stay connected to you r page from their page, their friend’s pages, or Google, it’s a modern way to stay relevant.

The statistics feature provides an easy way to see who’s adding you in their circles and where you rank on the list of most popular pages.

What Can It Do For You?

Google+ provides a variety of tools that can help you market, but more importantly, become a part of their everyday world; you can be in constant conversation. Better yet, there is very little you actually have to do.

Get a Google+ badge. You can place this badge on your site, and various pages, and it will link everyone to your Google Plus page.

Your badge will also allow people to +1 you. This allows them to essentially recommend you with a quick click of the mouse.

Once people have “recommended” your page via the +1, it will automatically surface when their friends are searching for the same thing. You get a personal recommendation without even asking for it.

People can add you to their different circles. This will allow them to follow and comment on your posts.

The feature direct connect allows people to type in the name of your business, preceded by the + sign, and be automatically taken to your page.

This Is All Good and Well, But…

Google+ is growing with each quarter, but hasn’t come close to reaching the size of other social networking sites, such as Facebook, with its 800 million user base. With the total Google+ population made up of 69% guys, it leaves out a large sector of your customer base.

Their current group of popular industries is small, and mostly revolves around the creative job sector. Though the site was recently ranked 8th out of the top 10 networking sites, it might not be large enough to make much of a difference… yet.

Growing at a rate of 625,000 new members a day, with a huge member spurt in December, the new social networking site could be well on its way. Paul Allen, a U.S. analyst, estimates that it will hit 400 million users by the end of 2012. Considering it took Facebook four years to surpass 60 million members, this can certainly mean Google+ is on its way to making an impact.

Should You or Shouldn’t You?

Taking my lead from the most recent predictions and membership jumps, I think it’s safe to say you should be getting involved sooner than later. Everyone wants a new way to connect with their favorite companies, and this will be an easy way for you to make that happen. Getting to know the site and its features before everyone else jumps on the band wagon can give you a leg up as it slowly becomes the standard. This feature rich social networking site can do wonders for your marketing abilities. Customers want to be spoken to and interacted with in a personal manner. Google+ lets you do all that and more with incredible ease. Grab our Google Plus Cheat Sheet and learn the ropes quickly.

Understanding the importance of marketing is crucial to the success of a business. Marketing is an extremely complex department because it has to wear many hats—price fixing, creation of a brand/image, public relations, telemarketing, PPC marketing, SEO marketing, sales duties—and the responsibilities never seems to end. If your marketing team thinks their job is nothing more than trying to sell a product or service, your company is likely missing out on all of the other great things that can come from a solid marketing department. If you want a social media presence, turn to marketing; if you want a press release, turn to marketing. In other words, marketing is no longer just creating a nice commercial or well written newspaper ad.

With all of the chaos that sometimes comes from the Internet, it’s hard to miss the importance of marketing. You know that it helps make you money, but for many that is the extent of it. Consider some of the things that make marketing so important, and try to put this kind of pride into each and every campaign:

Top 3 Reasons Your Company Should Understand the Importance of Marketing

1. Marketing Shapes a Company Reputation

Remember how important reputation was when you were in high school? And how horrible it was if, for whatever reason, you found yourself with a bad reputation? Even if you have had a great reputation you’re entire life, you’ve known someone who wasn’t looked upon very highly. The get right to the point: reputation does matter, and this does transfer over into the business world. People want to be around a company with a good reputation and want to stay away from those “bad apples.” It is the job of the marketing department to not only to sell a product or service, but sell an entire company. This is no easy task and often involves a high level of creativity and a knack for planning. Reputation is generally formed for a company through social media, customer reviews, and public appearances.

2. Marketing Brings in Revenue

It may seem obvious, but marketing is important when it comes to revenue. This is typically what people think about when they think “the importance of marketing,” but some still miss the reason this is so important. While it may seem that a marketing department puts the thought into a consumer’s head and then sales takes over, this isn’t always the case. Marketing can, and often does, make a sale all on its own. If marketing is done correctly and successfully, nothing more will be needed to help bring in a sale. Although a sale is usually a combined effort, your marketing team can take pride in knowing that they have the power and control to bring in some serious revenue for the company.

3. Marketing Keeps a Company Relevant

While every department has its own responsibilities that are crucial to a company, no department is forced to deal with as much change as a marketing department. If this department slacks, the entire company will be stuck in the past. Coming up with marketing campaigns is a way to bring awareness to a brand (slightly different than creating a reputation), and you cannot bring awareness to a brand when your competitors are using more advanced marketing techniques. You have to always be at the top of your game, ready to be innovative and creative. If a new marketing tactic takes off, it is crucial that a company implements this tactic in order to remain on the scene.

It’s easy to overlook the importance of marketing because it seems so straightforward. Many see PR and sales as completely different aspects of business, but in the end they are all under the umbrella term “marketing.” This makes marketing extremely important for every company, so whether you’re a company owner or someone working in marketing, you deserve to have a sense of pride for what you do every day.

Does anyone have any other reasons why marketing is so important?

The New Year will bring about changes for every web designer, and it is no surprise that this gets overwhelming. Between trying to recover from the holidays and getting started on that “new year new diet” mentality once again, it’s hard to keep up with all of the upcoming web design trends. For this reason, I leave you with one simple thought: Responsive web design. If you remember nothing else about the newest web design approaches, remember this term and give it your undivided attention.

Responsive web design is arguably going to be the most important thing for web designers to implement in the New Year. For those who are unfamiliar, responsive web design refers to a website that adjusts its elements to the particular screen size. Whether it be a big screen TV or a mobile phone, it’s important that a website looks right. There are a few things that will happen when you utilize responsive web design:

Images will resize based on the screen size

Buttons will be larger for those using a small screen

The least important information will be moved to the bottom for those using a small screen (search bar, advertisements, etc.); therefore pulling important content to the top

The layout will easily change based on the screen size (widescreen, tiny screen, etc.)

This aspect of web design will become extremely important in the near future because smartphones and tablets are growing in popularity. Now more than ever, people surf the internet, make purchases, and update their social networks on these smaller screens. According to Search Engine Land, more than 1/5 of all searches will be completed on a mobile device in the upcoming year.

Examples of Responsive Web Design

Consider the following example from The Boston Globe. Notice that on the tablet version (in the middle) the advertisement is found on the bottom. This allows the most important content to be seen at the top. The smallest version (on the right) has eliminated the advertisement on the initial search page and placed the picture on the bottom. Once again, the most important content is on the top.

Had they left the formatting alone, someone would pull up this webpage on their mobile phone and see nothing but a huge picture, and then they would scroll down and see nothing but a huge advertisement. In other words, they would have no idea what the article was even about (or if there even was an accompanying article).

Although most problems occur when going from a big screen to a small screen, the need to optimize does go both ways. Consider the poor example below from Elated. This website was obviously intended by the web designer to be viewed on a smaller screen such as a laptop or a tablet; however, someone viewed this page on a widescreen computer or TV. Because this website did not use responsive web design, the viewer sees a lot of white space wasted on the sides of the screen. This therefore causes the webpage to look a little bit strange.

Without responsive web design, it would be extremely difficult to keep up with so many different formats and screen resolutions. Unfortunately, getting started with responsive web design is a bit more complicated than simply changing the size of the font or coloring in some extra white space. However, once you know the basics getting started with responsive web design is actually quite simple.

Getting Started with Responsive Web Design

Before getting ready to dive into responsive web design, it is important that you understand CSS. If not, visit w3schools.com for a tutorial. Once you’re familiar with CSS, you can begin utilizing responsive web design. There are two aspects that are particularly important:

1. Meta Tags

Most browsers automatically scale HTML pages to a specific size. Therefore, you must disable this automatic scale by putting a specific Meta Tag (shown below) in the <head>. This will tell the browser to use the size of the device as opposed to the default scale.

<meta name=”viewport” content=”width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0″>

2. CSS Media Queries

This allows you to create rules that will only apply to certain size screens. In other words whenever a browser’s width and height are a certain size, your website will know what to do; it will change based on the rules you customized.

Responsive Web Design in Depth

Meta Tags and CSS Media Queries will get you started, but responsive web design is all about customization. As a web designer you will likely find that this is fairly simple; however it will be time consuming. It is important to do your homework and figure out exactly how you want your webpages to look when viewed on certain sized screens. This will depend on the original layout of your webpage, the number of advertisements, and the number of images to name a few.

For an in depth look at the behind the scenes tips for responsive website design, consider visiting Web Design Shock or Elated. Both offer pages and pages of detailed information. Although it may seem like a lot of information at first, this solution will save you a lot of headaches in the future. If web devices continue to be produced at the rate they did these last few years, it will be impossible to keep up. If nothing else, this project should keep your mind busy on optimization and away from those holiday cookies.

Just about everyone is an author on Google in one way or another. For this reason, the site has had to make a few changes. The third change, the introduction of “author stats,” has finally been introduced. If you missed the first two enhancements, take some time to catch up:

1. First: Link to the author’s profile page

With the explosion of blogging and freelance writing, authors everywhere were beginning to question their online presence. Last month, Google took this to heart and gave users the ability to click the name of the author in search results in order to see the author’s Google+ profile page. This helped the author gain visibility and gave the user another way to determine the credibility of an article.

2. Second: More articles by the author

Although this was great for a few weeks, authors still hoped for more. Google then created a “more by [author name]” link that allows authors to see all of the articles they’ve written by simply clicking the link. More importantly, the introduction of this link allows users to see other articles the author has written. These articles are taken from an author’s Google+ page as well as those already indexed by Google. Check out the screenshot from Search Engine Land below:

3. Third: Availability of author stats

The final piece of the puzzle (at least for now) is the introduction of “Author Stats.” A part of Webmaster Tools, the new statistics page will show an author how often their content is seen on a Google SERP (search engine results page) as well as how many impressions and clicks the content received. To get more advanced date such as the number of clicks, authors must associate their content with a Google Profile. This is typically done through email verification. Check out an “Author Stats” page below:

How to Get Started with Author Stats

Getting starting with “Author Stats” is actually quite simple. Visit google.com/webmaster and then login with your Google+ username. Although Google admits the service isn’t perfect yet, they are hoping to get reactions from users, so give it a try!

For marketing departments, the New Year means time to get trendy. It is important for small businesses to stay up-to-date on current marketing practices if they plan to compete with dominant brands, but it can sometimes be hard to keep track. How do all of the major corporations do it? The trick is this: Get ready for the trends before they happen.

It can be difficult to try and understand something and put it into action all at once, so it’s important to take the time to prepare for any marketing changes that may occur in your business. Consider the top ten marketing ideas for your business in 2012 and get ready before the New Year hits:

1. QR codes – Also known as “quick response codes,” these little barcodes allow people to scan the code on your ad using a smartphone. The code then takes them right to a website of your choosing.

2. Infographics – Plain text is getting old; people will want to see information depicted visually to help explain boring or complicated topics.

3. Mobile Marketing – According to Search Engine Land, more than 1/5 of all searches will be completed on a mobile device. The New Year means optimizing your website for this “mobile takeover.”

4. Social Media Keywords – SEO is no longer just for Google. Companies will use keywords to help people find their pages on a social media search.

5. EBooks – Companies will begin putting out free ebooks for those wanting more information on a product or company. Your company can also offer advice such as how to start a small business, how to increase traffic, etc.

6. Brand pages – 2011 introduced Google+ and new Twitter brand pages. This will be a must-have for any company in 2012.

7. International Marketing – Companies will begin to focus on marketing to different cultures. This includes translating a blog into different languages and finding new outlets for traditional marketing (Spanish radio, Chinese TV stations, etc.)

8. Local Based Marketing – People will begin using local search engines and supporting companies in their communities; companies will need to increase local marketing efforts.

9. Co-Marketing – In such an up-and-down economy, businesses will need to team up. Find a company that compliments your company, and strike up a business proposal that involves referrals, shared audiences, etc.

10. Video – YouTube users are expected to grow, so video marketing is expected to grow. Create a podcast or YouTube video to help teach consumers about your company.

Ten new ideas may seem a bit overwhelming, but businesses should only focus on four or five. Once a company gets those four or five new marketing tactics working well, then it’s time to move on to the rest. No company should try and incorporate all of these new ideas unless they have a really solid foundation and a large marketing department. As they say: Slow and steady wins the race.

Most companies understand the importance of search engine optimization (SEO) and the need to link back to the company website. However, what some businesses fail to realize is that the keywords and phrases that are used when linking back to a website are extremely important. If you’re starting a small business or are new to the SEO world, don’t sweat it. It is never too late to decide which keywords will help your website rank well. Consider how to choose the keywords that will get your website to the top of that Google search page:

5 Steps to Finding the Keyword to Get That Top Search Engine Ranking

1. Think like your target audience.

The first step in deciding which keywords are important for your SEO efforts is to think like your target audience. You want to think about what someone may type in a search bar as opposed to general words that describe your company. For example, if you work at a “paper company” and “sell paper” (The Office fans anyone?), this is what you do. If someone was going to look to buy paper, however, they are likely going to type in something like “premium paper” or “paper vendors,” and not a keyword like “sell paper.”

2. Think specific.

This is where many companies are misguided when it comes to keywords. They think like their target audience, but they think on a broad scale. The truth is the broader keyword terms have a significantly higher amount of competition. Therefore, it is much more difficult to get your page ranked well on a keyword with so much competition. If you try to target the keyword “paper,” the chances of you making it on the first page of Google is extremely slim. According to a study completed by Optify, the top three organic positions receive 58.4 percent of all clicks from users. In other words, it is important you target specific keywords so that you can be ranked higher, faster. In addition, those who type in specific keywords are more likely to buy.

3. Consider multiple meanings.

Once you think you have decided on keywords for your business to target, it’s time to consider all the possible meanings that keyword can have. Think of it like a background check–you must make sure there is nothing hiding if you’re going to go with a candidate (or in this case, a keyword). This is generally taken care of when working to create specific keywords, but oftentimes even companies “specific” keywords are too broad. For example, if you have decided you want to use the keyword (also called a keyword phrase) “office paper,” consumers will likely get results about office paper clips, how to save office paper, office paper weights, office paper folders, etc. Therefore, it is important you consider all of these multiple meanings.

4. Research the keywords

If you want to get that top search engine ranking, you have to do your research. One of the first steps you can take is simply typing in the keyword into Google search. Once you see how many results pop up, you will have an idea about the amount of work you will have to do to get that keyword ranked. Then, consider using one of the many services available that will help give you real numbers about whether or not a keyword is popular. A few popular services include Google AdWords, Wordtracker, and SEM Rush.

5. Make sure your keywords are relevant to your site.

This may seem obvious, but many companies attempt to target keywords simply because they are popular. Although it is exciting to see your website rank to the top of a Google search engine page, it means nothing if your company has nothing to do with whatever a customers typed into the search box. First, consumers will see the title of your company and realize it has nothing to do with what they need. Second, even if your company has a generic title, consumers will click on the link and realize you have nothing to offer in terms of what they’re searching for. Don’t assume that people will click on your website and then suddenly remember they actually need your exact product or service; thus looking into your business proposal. This will be a waste of your time and resources.

Keyword research seems tricky and can take a while to master, so don’t feel too overwhelmed at first. Consider hiring someone to help you track keywords and choose keywords. This is becoming increasingly important; so many people have developed this skill. Fortunately for business owners, much of the “old” will carry over into 2012, but there will be just enough new trends to keep them on their toes. If you’re a business owner looking to stay with the times, there are things to keep in mind in every department of your business. Consider a few of the trends many expect will be coming your way:

1. Google PageRank will become even less important.

Each year Google tries it’s hardest to rank websites based on links and overall activity. When Google began ranking pages people would use many black hat tactics (buying websites for keywords, using invisible keywords, etc.), but the system has slowly evolved. In 2012 this will likely evolve even further to make sure that only the best ranks to the top of a Google search results page. While the system currently relies heavily on linking, you may see newer and more advanced methods this upcoming year (we will have to wait to see what Google has in store!)

2. The popularity of mobile phones for surfing the web will increase

The want for the Internet on a cell phone has grown each year, and this year is expected to be no different. Search Engine Land claims more than 1/5 of all searches will be completed on a mobile device. For this reason, companies are going to have to improve their websites for mobile search convenience and keep this in mind when advertising. VoIP phone systems technology is also expected to grow in popularity, so be sure that your company isn’t still stuck with an old business phone system. People will want to use the internet for everything, including making phone calls.

3. Facebook will become less popular due to other social networking sites

Google+ could very well take users away from Facebook. According to Search Engine Roundtable, Facebook lost 6 million users in the US in 2011. This number will likely continue to rise because people are in search of newer social networking sites. Facebook has also had several problems with privacy, forcing many young graduates to monitor their Facebook pages. This has made the site less popular, and therefore it could be in trouble (for Facebook standards) in 2012.

4. Real time analytics will be used more often

With the recent addition of real time analytics to Google Analytics, more companies will realize just how valuable these can be to a company. Although this has been offered in the past, Google sets the standards for many smaller businesses. Now that Google Analytics offers real time date, more and more companies will be using this feature to measure success.

5. HTML5 will overtake Flash

When it comes to web development, we will likely see more companies using HTML5 improvements. This will cause more companies to get creative when designing webpages. In addition, smartphones will not be installing Flash for consumers. This makes using HTML5 extremely important for businesses.

It is very important that businesses look at the expected trends of website trends 2012 and begin preparing. Many companies have already begun putting mobile campaigns in place and creating a Google+ business page, so your company should consider doing the same. In the end, website trends 2012 should be a year of hard work and big results for all businesses willing to ride the wave.
